Description
"He wasn't asking much, damn it, just to let him prostitute himself in his own way." In the mid-20th century, Carlos Denegri was the most influential opinion leader in Mexico. Star reporter for the daily Excelsior, he had a network of international contacts envied by all journalists. Spoiled by power, as a political columnist he stood out for his lack of scruples, to the extent that Julio Scherer called him "the best and the vilest of reporters." He industrialized "chayote" when that word was not yet used in political jargon. In his Political File, where he served as unofficial spokesman for the Presidency and collected all the mentions, he could defame anyone with absolute impunity. According to Carlos Monsiv?is, a bump in that column represented "a season in hell" for any candidate for public office. Although he earned millions from posting praise, he became even richer through extortion, keeping what he knew about his powerful clients. Carlos Denegri's public personality is inseparable from the atrocious misogynistic vexations he committed in his private life. He was as overbearing and despotic in dealing with women as he was in journalism, so that his pathology was both intimate and social. X-ray of Mexican-style machismo and epitaph of the perfect dictatorship, this novel is an incisive and scathing study, supported by arduous research work, which at times borders on tragic farce. Enrique Serna returns to one of his favorite narrative veins, the reconstruction of the past, to deliver an exciting historical fresco.
